In the mid-90s, a new division was created at Polaroid, whose goal was to develop a new type of paper that does not require ink, toner or sublimation tape to print an image. The technology itself is called Zink, which stands for Zero Ink, that is, "no ink".

The color layers contain transparent microcrystals that are colored under the influence of temperature pulses. That is, the printer actually burns the image on the paper.
